Hypertension, or high blood pressure, gets a lot of publicity, but the opposite condition – hypotension, or low blood pressure – can also be serious. Blood pressure is the force with which the blood hits the artery walls as the heart beats. If blood pressure is too low, not enough blood is sent to the brain and other vital organs. The organs may be damaged by the low blood supply.

Someone with low blood pressure may feel faint, dizzy and lightheaded. They may also experience fatigue, nausea, blurred vision, pale skin and a cold sweat. A very low blood pressure is life threatening.

A blood pressure reading has two numbers. The first number is the pressure recorded in an artery when the heart is contracting. This is called the systolic blood pressure and normally has a value of less than 120 mm Hg (millimeters of mercury). The second number, which is recorded when the heart is relaxed, is called the diastolic blood pressure. This normally has a value of less than 80 mm Hg.

A diagnosis of hypotension is often based on symptoms rather than on blood pressure reading. A person is sometimes said to have hypotension if their systolic blood pressure is lower than 90 mm Hg, or if their diastolic blood pressure is lower than 60 mm Hg. However, some people have a blood pressure that is lower than these numbers yet experience no ill effects. Very fit athletes, for example, tend to have a lower blood pressure than less fit people. People with a healthy weight and non-smokers tend to have lower blood pressures than overweight people and people who smoke. On the other hand, some people may develop symptoms of hypotension at blood pressures that are higher than 90 mm Hg/60 mm Hg.

A low blood pressure in healthy people is generally not a problem. In fact, as long as no symptoms appear, it’s much healthier to have a low blood pressure than a high blood pressure. People with lower blood pressure have a reduced risk of a heart attack or stroke. However, low blood pressure accompanied by symptoms needs to be treated.

There are many possible causes of hypotension. Low blood pressure may be a temporary change from a person’s normal condition or may be constant. Blood loss from external or internal bleeding reduces the amount of liquid in the blood vessels, which in turn reduces blood pressure. Dehydration can have the same effect, and so can a large amount of fluid loss in vomiting, diarrhea or excessive sweating. Inflammation also causes fluid to leave blood vessels and can lead to hypotension. In addition, heart problems that decrease the force of the heartbeat or blood vessel problems can create low blood pressure.

Some illnesses, infections, medications and hormonal changes can create low blood pressure as well. One cause of hormonal problems is a condition called adrenal insufficiency. We have two adrenal glands, one on top of each kidney. These glands produce hormones that affect blood volume and blood pressure. If they don’t make enough of these hormones, low blood pressure can result.

When we stand up from a lying or sitting position our blood pressure naturally lowers because gravity causes more blood to collect in the veins in our legs, but the body normally compensates for this decrease in blood pressure very rapidly and the blood pressure returns to normal. In some people this blood pressure adjustment takes much longer. This problem is known as orthostatic hypotension. Orthostatic hypotension may also occur in people who stand in one place for a long time, such as soldiers standing to attention.

One of the symptoms of anaphylactic shock is a rapid and dramatic drop in blood pressure. Anaphylaxis, or anaphylactic shock, is a severe and life threatening reaction that some people experience when they are exposed to certain allergens.

Another cause of a sudden drop in blood pressure is the vasovagal reaction. This reaction may be accompanied by fainting and develops due to fear or pain. It’s caused by the stimulation of the vagus nerve, which slows the heartbeat and dilates (widens) the blood vessels. Dilation of blood vessels lowers blood pressure.

If you discover that you have low blood pressure but are experiencing no ill effects there’s probably no cause for concern. However, if you are experiencing low blood pressure accompanied by a health problem you should seek a doctor’s advice. In addition, if you measure your blood pressure on your own and find that it has suddenly become lower, even if you don’t feel ill you should visit your doctor.

I have owned well over a dozen GPS units in the past and have had several cases for them. When I got the chance to try this new Lowepro case I decided to give it a shot. I have been familiar with Lowepro for many years, going back to my days in the wholesale photographic business. They have a great reputation among professional photographers and one which is well deserved.

Overall I like this case. It is fairly compact and has a removable padded compartment for a GPS receiver with a screen size up to 5″. I do wish that they made just a few simple changes which I go over in this short video review. I hope that it is helpful to you.

Measuring in at 4.1″ x 8.1″ x 5.7″ and weighing about 8 ounces, Lowepro’s Navi Plus GPS Bag easily accommodates my Magellan Navigator and accessories. Like the manufacturer’s line of camera bags, this multi case system offers two things I value most. Protection and durability.

I’m most impressed with the larger bag. This outer case provides ample storage with its two velcro secured side pockets and an elastic mesh interior storage area. The EVA padded interior with its adjustable divider allows for great protection of my gear. The black nylon blend exterior is weatherproof and cleans up easy with a damp cloth. I like the sturdy dual zipper closure. The padded handle has a nice ergonomic feel. For those that need more room for GPS storage, I suggest removing the smaller case and running with the larger unit. The larger case can easily stow a unit up to 6″.

The smaller case will accommodate up to a 4.3″ screen. Like its camera gear, Lowepro lines this case with a soft tricot blend that does a great job protecting my GPS screen. I like the addition padding of this case. This unit is also outfitted with two small interior pockets. The bag is secured by velcro attachments. The only negative I found on the smaller bag is the flimsy plastic D ring attached to the exterior. Its been my experience that over the years these items do not hold up well. The bag exterior is covered in weatherproof nylon.

Speaking from personal experience, I can say that Lowepro has for years lived up to their billing as having one of the best lifetime limited warranties anywhere. Four years ago I had a problem with the zippers on one of their products. I sent it to the factory for repair and surprisingly received a new replacement bag. That alone speaks volumes.

Lowepro also sports a consumer friendly website for registration and product support. I strongly suggest that buyers register their product as soon as it comes out of the box. Even with my issues with the plastic D ring, I believe that this fine Lowepro product can go the distance and offer me the durability and protection that I demand.

After getting my husband a GPS, I saw him just pushing everything into the glove box of his car. Then, when we would go on trips and he would move it my car or a rental car, the same thing would happen.

This is the perfect size for his GPS and all the “stuff” that comes with it. In fact, this little bag is great for a variety of things: carrying a camera, keeping all my diabetes testing supplies together, etc. The quality is good: the material is thick and it’s easy to clean (including removing pet hair from it). The price is also in keeping with the product.
